More than 150 companies worldwide fueled technology meeting in Costa Rica

The Foreign Trade Corporation of Costa Rica (PROCOMER) and the Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (CAMTIC), held last June 1 and 2, the Costa Rica Technology Insight, the most important event of digital technologies in Central America.

The meeting was held at the Hotel Barcelo San Jose Palacio in San José, Costa Rica and was attended by 155 entrepreneurs, both Costa Rican and international.

During the activity, there were nearly 1.900 business meetings, on 70 negotiating tables.

This generated more than 50 strategic alliances in the areas of outsourcing and outtasking, development of custom software, mobile applications, software products for the financial sector, software for cooperatives and solidarity associations, cloud computing, software as a service (SaaS its acronym in English), data center, web design, gaming, telecommunications, business process outsourcing, digital entertainment, etc.

"This edition of the Costa Rica Technology Insight broke a record because of the number of participating companies, which came from India, United States, Canada and 12 destinations. We managed to organize 70 negotiating table with more than 1.800 business meetings over two days as part of an industry that, only last year generated U.S. $1.214 million in exports of computer services and information", said Jorge Sequeira, General Manager for PROCOMER.  

The dynamic and productive capacity of the technology sector, represent the added value that allows Costa Rica is ranked as the leading exporter of high technology in Latin America and the fourth largest exporter in the world, according to World Development Indicators 2009, published by the World Bank.   

"Costa Rica is undoubtedly a great strength in their ability to learn and their creative abilities. In addition, domestic firms offer flexibility thanks to its scale. This allows them to adapt to changing market conditions", said Alexander Mora, President of CAMTIC.

The importance of human resources

The inaugural lecture of the Costa Rica Technology Insight 2011 was in charge of the international consultant Frances Karamouzis, VP Distinguished Analyst Gartner Inc, the recognized international firm that specializes in information and communication technologies.   

During her speech, the expert acknowledged the value of human capital of Costa Rica and the need to continue with an educational process that enhances those capabilities.  

The Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, Anabel Gonzalez, agreed with Gartner expert. 

"The digital technology sector has been very successful. This sector is highly innovative, well organized and visionary. The results are clear: 30% of total exports are related to this industry", said Minister Anabel González.

In his opinion, the future challenge is to continue to strengthen human resources, the country's capacity to insert itself in the digital age by opening the telecommunications and increasing penetration of broadband.     

According to Gonzalez, Costa Rica must commit to the integration of digital technology industry to world markets, through a national brand and negotiating trade agreements, based on the concept of digital products, the impact of innovation in the country and protection of intellectual property.    

The minister acknowledged that the work of government in each of these areas is vital for growth and development of the technology sector and the country.

Lectures

During the event, CAMTIC and PROCOMER also developed two public lectures.

The first was a panel discussion on the issue of how to improve the position of Costa Rica in the area of outsourcing.

This panel was led by Frank Casale, CEO of the Outsourcing Institute; Frank Rubinetti, VP of Nearshore Americas; Jerry Luftman, IT Director of Technology Management Stevens Institute; and Alexander Mora, President of CAMTIC, The Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies of Costa Rica.   

 

The second conference was about funding for the digital sector.

This topic was presented by Jaime Guzmán, President and CEO of JGF Financial Inc.; Allan Rodriguez, former vice president, co-founder and partner at E3 Capital; and Ronald Jiménez, president and founder of CODISA Software Corp.   

 

PROCOMER and CAMTIC are already working on the version of the Costa Rica Technology Insight 2012, to be held in June next year.
